Community benefit and how it will work:
The camp's intention is to help the community as much as possible without spoiling it. The camp is the community's
property and registered as a CBO (Community Based Organisation) in Kenya. I am a member of the CBO and our
decisions are made together. My work is on a voluntary basis.
Right now it is run by a retired hotel manager from the community. Shadow manager Sammy, who helped building the
camp from day one and also has the best education, will have to take part in a hotel management course, before he
can attain his manager's license (we are still fund-raising for this). He will then be in charge together with a volunteer
from overseas.
Once the camp will make some profit, it will be divided into three categories:
- Community profit: A large percentage will go straight into community supporting projects in health, schooling,
improvement of diet. The direct cause and approach should be decided upon by a specifically formed elders
committee. Their first suggestion is to build a subsidised dispensary.
- Staff wages: This way the camp cannot fall into too much of a deficit in low seasons. It also means that staff have
a personal interest and involvement in the business. And they will get paid proportional to their work done.
- The smallest percentage should be saved in a sinking fund for repairs and expanding Mida Ecocamp.
These percentages can only be arranged once we know how much of a profit Mida Ecocamp can attract. It will be
necessary to review these percentages in regular intervals.
We are trying to involve as many community members as possible. Here who will profit:
- the direct employees of Mida Ecocamp, which will be there all year round
- In high season we will require at least double the skeleton staff
- tourguides
- boatmen
- locals, who are selling us vegetables, fruit, fish, milk and charcoal
- children, who will profit from a sponsorship scheme, either by direct donations or from a part of the camp's profit
- local craftsmen, who can sell their souvenirs in our office with no percentage taken by the camp
- the Giriama Dancers and Drummers
- fishermen, who we would like to help with replacing the too small nets
- the whole community from the new projects
...not to forget the Giriama tradition that is being kept alive and the environment that gains protection.
